The fall colors are winding down but pockets of extreme color still exist. In general the color in the river valleys is subdued now and lots of leaves are now picking up that rusty dead look. However, some gum trees (sweet an sour – black) are showing incredible color this year. Yellow, orange, red, purple and blue (rare) are the colors present and mixed in many trees. The dogwoods and a few sassafras have extreme scarlet red now and sumacs show scarlet-orange and even a pink hue. Most oaks are nearly done with some red showing up this week. Hickory trees are mostly brown, but are occasionally bright yellow. The maples are incredible this year from yellow to orange to red. Mix all this together with a heavy scattering of green pines and the forest in really fantastic. Black willows are very bright yellow now along the rivers and the Beech trees are yellow orange in bottom fields and on some benches.
Rain is forecast for tomorrow and wind and cold which will take us far past this peak quickly by the upcoming weekend. BUT ….. WHAT A YEAR FOR AUTUMN COLORS !
