Two weeks ago a photographed this guy working the dried and withered plants in my garden; which have produced a substantial number of seeds early this year (maybe a plus for the drought ?); but they will be eaten early and produce a seed deficit in the winter. He has beautiful feathering and is as showy as a Scarlet Tanager. Many of the other cardinals look a little “dog-eared” from the drought. I have been watering them daily and at times they seem to want and need water more than food:
