I have sure seen a lot of these this beautiful woodpeckers this January here in NW Arkansas. These guys capitalized on the acorn crop last fall by storing them (caching) in a deep hole usually in old rotten hackberries, sycamores, and oaks along the Little Buffalo River. I really hope this continues through this spring so can follow one pair nesting and fledging. This photo was taken yesterday with my Canon 7D and a 300mm EF300L f/2.8 IS from the car window.
It looks like rain now, Saturday, at 11:30 but I hope it does not all slide to the south and wast like it did last week. Here’s hoping !!

Beautiful
I was out a few mornings ago here, and an incredible woodpecker, similar colors but different pattern, flew into the pear tree out my back door.
I hate those… I wish I had my camera moments!
great shot.
