I drove down to Steel Creek today (2/13) and saw a small group of deer (mostly does) and a herd of Elk with the Bull watching his harem. Two of the largest does were sparring (boxing while standing on hind legs). They do this a lots in the spring long before dropping fawns to claim a grazing territory. Its’ mostly pointless, but it is a strong instinct:

Got this photo on this sunny but cold day on Murray Road in central Newton County, Arkansas. This is a female. Their numbers increase through March and April; then they are gone until next fall:

I put a galvanized bucket by a shed this afternoon (2/10). It had a few sunflower seeds and a few oat grans in the bottom. The American Goldfinches found the bucket and began cleaning it out; which I thought was funny – they show no fear. I guessed they were starved and went to town to get more nijer seed and filled the feeders this  afternoon. Not great photos had to grab the nearest camera:

The chickadees have started their morning mating song just after first light. So good to hear them.  I saw what I think is a Song Sparrow on a crazy oak that is yet to loose its leaves. Beautiful morning on the 4th of the month but we are supposed to get cold and rain-snow tonight and just plain cold tomorrow:

It about 50F at lunchtime today. I took a sandwich down to the river for a change. The water is clear and blue and I noticed a forsythia starting to bloom and crocus and daffodils starting to open; lovely. Bluebirds appear paired up and looking to nest soon. May go fishing this afternoon.
