Not a common duck to see (at least to me) on Boxley Pond last Saturday. Since last Saturday, it’s been so cold all week and I struggled to town on Wednesday. The ice was melted on Highway 327, but up at higher altitudes, like climbing out of my place, it was very icy. I am also including a photo from AR 327:

Carolina Wren in the sleet this morning and a photo of the Murray Valley at 5 PM last evening. More ice and sleet on the way tonight, Thursday-Friday and on Sunday; WOW, winter all at once. Only supposed to reach 40F today and its likely I’m stuck here at home a while even with 4WD; deep snow I can deal with – but these roads are narrow, steep, crooked, ands icy:

I visited Richland Wilderness on Friday afternoon. I got out and walked a bit on the south end of the Creek. The Witch Hazel is in bloom and very fragrant now. My favorite place after 50 years. It is still wild. with no trails; except a rough trail blazed to Richland Creek from the small camping spot above the bridge on the South side of the creek, below the confluence with the Devil’s Fork. There has been a lot of road construction on the north entrance; I don’t like what they have done; it will take 20 years to regenerate what they destroyed. Saw a bunch of Northern Cardinals at the re-routed entrance also.
The southern entrance remains the same expect a few more houses each year. The south entrance road is badly washboarded for 7 miles. The northern entrance has been re-routed, best I can tell (up near Iceledo Gap). There has been very heavy logging near the north entrance also. All in all, it was a beautiful day with highs about 44F. Left through the south entrance road paralleling Falling Water Creek:

There were long icicles around and about Roark Bluff at Steel Creek today and water was still high enough to float today. The ice in the sickles appeared aqua-blue in the late light today or maybe it was minerals. The temperature started at 15F at 6:30 AM but rose to 50F by 2 PM; beautiful day in the mountains:

I started the day at Lost Valley; with flurries and low 20’s after a night of high North winds. Over at Lost Valley the water was running well in Clark Creek and the Beech Tees offered a nice contrast:
