I added one new Bluebird House (and retired one) to my trail this spring. The Bluebirds started checking out the new house today in the stages to breeding; the wing wave. The male found the house and brought the female to it. She looked it over real thoroughly (inside and out); then the wing wave that signals mating is near and nest building will happen that same day (the new treated post is straight, camera crooked), Taken from 150′ with a Canon 50D and an EF400L f/5.6:

On Wednesday, in the early morning, I walked up Clark Creek to the natural bridge at Lost Valley. What a beautiful morning with a few Service Berry, and Shadbush (Popcorn) trees busting out in bloom. Some clear water flowing to the point where it usually goes underground in the Clark Creek creek-bed. Temperatures were in the 60s and sunny.

By 4 PM Severe Thunderstorms broke out in multiple lines. We had 7 Severe thunderstorm warnings that afternoon and evening. The first was at 4:30 PM and the last at 3 AM the next day, Thursday. WOW, how lucky I was not to received any major damage !

Had spring in February, as usual, (Daffodils, Crocus, Bluets, Johnny Jump Ups, Harbinger, etc.) – we had extremely high pollen counts due to trees; then 20 days of very cold weather including a record low of 2F (breaking the old record by 20 degrees) lots of ice and snow – did I mention ICE and ICE ! A major kill off of everything took place. Last week we started again only this time the grasses are pollenating and both categories are very high to extreme. I have been miserable for 5 days; actually glad to see the rain today (3/18) and tomorrow (3/19).

Did you ever notice that when you see large clumps of daffodils blooming and not a house in sight, that that might have been an old settlers cabin; long gone ?!? I stopped at 3 clumps  yesterday and saw a old rock foundation near every group of daffodils. Cool.

I was so shocked at the grass color just as the sun set over Shiloh Mountain (SW of me) last evening 2/25; those are the peaks of Taylor Mountain to the South.

Just spotted him a 1 PM today today, February 24th is huge 4-5 foot diameter oak tree in the back yard. He was busy watching the songbirds feed at the 3 feeders I keep filled back there. Suddenly, he lurched off the tree and was hot on the pursuit of a American Goldfinch that he barely missed. I believe it was a Cooper’s Hawk based on visuals. Both Cooper’s and Sharp-shinned Hawks are small, fast, hawks with long tails. As raptors then tend to find spots with lots of bird activity and hang out there:

Not a common duck to see (at least to me) on Boxley Pond last Saturday. Since last Saturday, it’s been so cold all week and I struggled to town on Wednesday. The ice was melted on Highway 327, but up at higher altitudes, like climbing out of my place, it was very icy. I am also including a photo from AR 327:

Carolina Wren in the sleet this morning and a photo of the Murray Valley at 5 PM last evening. More ice and sleet on the way tonight, Thursday-Friday and on Sunday; WOW, winter all at once. Only supposed to reach 40F today and its likely I’m stuck here at home a while even with 4WD; deep snow I can deal with – but these roads are narrow, steep, crooked, ands icy:
