Posts Tagged ‘Fall colors’

The colors this year never popped as they do in late October to the first few days of November. The result is a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th peak. Many trees refused to change from green to their fall colors until this morning. I drove into Jasper from my home today and was surprised to see that some south facing mountain tops had extraordinary orange, yellow, rust coloration; actually very pretty. Along a few rivers or larger creeks their was all lots of reds and oranges. By this time of the year the forest in usually brown.

This will be the final coloration however as an arctic blast is headed for us by morning. It is 70F  at noon today and tomorrow’s high will be in the low 40s and then 10 days, at least, of of temperatures way below mid-November’s to late-Novembers norms. I do expect teens with hight in the very low 30’s by Thursday:

The low side of Henderson Mountain facing north, is in view in this photo and also its reflection. If you look closely, you may be able to see the highway winding up the side of the mountain. Henderson Mountain is about 10 miles long and has several points. Photo taken from Parthenon, Arkansas:

Had a thunderstorm at 4 AM (1/3 inch of rain) but the lightning knocked out my power until 7 AM. The colors are quite pretty up north near the Missouri border, and down south in the Ouachita range but this sandstone on the Buffalo and Little Buffalo Boston Mountain peaks just does not make as stunning colors; as further north and south many years. We had a very wet summer and no hard freezes yet; but close. Many trees are still green but look to be turning brown and dry. I am not expecting much more color this year (just Maples) – HERE. Instead today I drove to some River access points and took a few reflections photos there (all 3 shot HDRs):

We got 2.01 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. I took these yesterday at the Ponca bridges. Adds Creek was running muddy, so the water above the low-water bridge was clear, and below the high bridge was murky to cloudy. It appears the first color peak will be in 7-10  days if the forecast for clear cooler weather for 7 days holds. The day was rainy, cloudy, and not much light getting through the clouds – that type of day tends to highly saturate the colors:
