It was a warm day here in the Murray Valley. I took my camera with me to the garden today. A Blue Grosbeak flew up into a tree from the orchard side of the garden. Later I heard, then saw a beautiful Summer Tanager on a downed limb; got photos of both:

A Male Summer Tanager pilfers a poor American Redstart’s nest

This is sort of funny ! This young male (probably un-mated) Summer Tanager spent an hour stealing freshly woven nesting material from a hardworking female American Redstart. Each time she would leave the nest to gather more nesting material, the pilfering Tanager, watching from high from the next tree over, would fly down and steal the materials she just brought to the nest. She made no headway in 20 trips during that hour. She never caught him stealing but you have to wonder what she was thinking after all that work ?
and ON and ON it goes !!!

What a difference from last year !! The rivers are running good right now. Everything is green and this cool wet weather looks to continue for another 2 weeks; sometimes Severe. Saw a Summer Tanager in this morning’s clouds and mist; here he is in all his rosey splendor. He was feasting on mulberries even though the are green yet:
In this map from 8 AM today the orange and red represent 2-4 inches of rain; the purple – 5 or more inches.
Female Tanagers – Scarlet and Summer

We luckily have both species here in Arkansas. The Summer Tanagers are more plentiful than the Scarlet Tanagers (by about 10 to 1). The Scarlet tanager requires a territory of about 10 acres and the Summer Tanager only about an acre or so. Notice the black-grey wings on the female Scarlet Tanager and the absence of black-grey on the female Summer Tanager. The female Summer Tanager has a bit more rose pigment in it’s feathers:
