This heavily molting male Indigo Bunting landed in a tree in the front yard today 9/30; I just happened to have a Canon 1DS Mark III with a 300 f/2.8 IS with me:

After a disastrous 2013, where I spotted maybe 3-4 Monarchs, 2014 is looking up, During the past week, I have seen about 50-75 each morning cruising Southwestward towards Mexico. Yesterday morning I saw over 100; simply cruising in that same direction. Today there are 7 on one butterfly bush (non-native) on a stop over. With several more days of nice weather forecast here; these appears to be a GOOD year for them. I’ll never forget 2012, when I had about 1,000 on a snakeroot patch behind my home. I took a short video of one that was on the bush with 6 others at 4:05 PM this afternoon taken with a handheld Canon G15:

This is the male of a pair of acorn savers stocking up for the coming winter. The tirelessly jam these nuts in about a dozen different trees, so deep, they are hard to retrieve. Come December they will go to their cache:

These leaf examples were found and photographed yesterday, 9/26/14, in the afternoon. These are only examples and most of the same trees are unchanged yet. The fog was thick this morning and we had to wait until 8;30 to take any photos. The final photo is of an Orchard Oriole in  a Sassafras Tree; all tasked with point and shoots.

The pair of juvenile male Pileated Woodpeckers in the woods behind my place, went for a training trip with Dad today. The two fledglings are both males, the third, a female, hangs out with her Mom all day. These babies were born in a second re-nest after a storm toppled their trees in late-June. The parents were brave and successful and the juveniles look healthy and strong; and none too soon. Warning, the photos are blurry from and incorrect shutter speed setting of 1/60th second – I was very angry with myself, used a Canon 50D set at f/11 and a Canon EF400L f/5.6 in low light with an ISO of 200 (bad planning) !!!!

A 7-point (large) White-tail buck versus an 8-point (larger) buck did a little sparring in a sweet gum grove tonight and then on the the clover patch; fun to watch and a whole lot of loud antlers. Taken through a themo-pane window at 6:30 PM 9/25/14 with a Canon 50D with a Canon EF400L f/5,6 lens:
