This is very early for a Barn Swallows to fledge and be fed by parents (last year was May 10th); I think this chick may have been knocked out of the nest way early, but he/she seems to be doing OK:

Red shouldered hawk – owns the place

Red Shoulders rarely take birds; they sen to prefer frogs, crawfish, and stream inhabitants (like water snakes). When things are frozen they seem to turn to voles, mice, etc. – they seem to leave the feeding songbirds alone. Infact, they are busy feeding very near to him. If a Coopers Hawk is in the area, there are no songbirds to be seen. These photos taken through a window with double-pane glass:

From Mt. Judea, got this photo of the fog lifting to the South. The Photo heading is nearly due East looking; across the Buffalo River to the Ozarks of Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri. The fog appears, at a distant point, to be crashing on shore: like giant ocean waves:

Ox-eye daisies seem early this year

Weird ! In a year where everything seemed late and then stayed in bloom along time; The highest and coldest areas go the Boston Mountain range some Red-buds are still at peak. Ox-eye daisies usually bloom May 15 – June 1. So this is unusual.
Purple and Blue

Had a second pair of Purple Martins examine the house today; never had much luck with these birds. They’re are quite a lot of full Purple Martins on top of Shiloh and on top of Henderson Mountain. I am situated on a bench about 1000 feet below the mountain top and 200′ above the Little Buffalo River. I guess my house is hard to find ! The Bluebirds continue to incubate their eggs. One house, low enough for me to seen inside, has either 4 or 5 eggs. The other house I’m certain they are nesting in, is too tall for me to see inside.
Other pairs of Bluebirds continue to explore the newer house in the “house hunting” efforts. All photos here taken with a Canon 50D and a EF400L f/5.6 lens:
March 17th (St. Patricks Day) — Rain turns to Ice and Snow

The storm center passed right over this Arkansas County; Newton. We first received, as posted yesterday, almost 3″ of rain; then it starting around noon to a quick changeover; it began first a higher elevations of the Boston Mountains and finally down to ~1000 feet. It was a wet snow with big flakes but was first we got an hour of ice and sleet. I drove out this morning around 8 AM to get a few photos, using a Canon 1DS Mark III Full Frame and a 17-40 Canon f/4 at f/4 zoom:
